10 October: Al-Qaeda has released an official statement confirming the “martyrdom” of Anwar al-Awlaki, its former head of external operations in Yemen.

Rumours of an announcement about his demise started circulating among jihadists on 6 October.

Suspected militants have paid tribute to Awlaki and welcomed his “martyrdom” in comments posted online since news of his death broke.

One member of an al-Qaeda discussion group posted an image that apparently promised retaliation for the killing.

It featured a gesticulating Awlaki delivering a sermon next to a heavy machine gun and a burning American flag.

Another member warned others to be cautious with their comments in the absence of a formal statement from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

“The deaths of our leaders lend credence to our call,” claimed another.

Others said that no one should grieve over his death but rejoice instead because he wanted to die for his religion.

Officials in Yemen announced on Friday 30 September that the radical American Islamic cleric had been killed.

Awlaki was believed to be the mastermind behind an English magazine for al-Qaeda followers called “Inspire”.

It carries articles urging people to carry out terrorist attacks and lessons in making bombs and handling weapons.

The 20-page, seventh issue of the magazine was published on 27 September and is devoted to celebrating the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

It also carried an advertisement for an article by Awlaki in a forthcoming issue, entitled: “Targeting the populations that are at war with the Muslims”.

The sixth issue carried a story which claimed that God was protecting Awlaki from US missile strikes.

It said: “In Shabwa, the US sent nearly a dozen missile strikes from a few unmanned drones upon Shaykh Anwar al-Awlaki.

“As a result, two mujahidin were martyred. But by the grace of Allah, they all missed Shaykh Anwar and he left the area without a scratch.

“The fact that the drones were unable to pinpoint his location nor follow him the rest of the way is a sign from Allah that He protects His believing slaves.

“In reference to the attempted assassination, the Shaykh jokingly said, ‘It looks as if someone was a bit angry with us this evening.’”

    Full AQAP statement:

Praise Allah Lord of the Worlds and prayer and peace upon our messenger Muhammad, prayer and peace upon him. And thereafter:

We confirm to the Jihadist Ummah that revolted on injustice the martyrdom of the hero Mujahid Shaykh Abu Abdulrahman Anwar bin Nasser al-Awlaqi.

His martyrdom was the result of an American aircraft raid, along with his companions
Abu Muhsen al-Maribi, Samir Khan, and Salem al-Marwani, may Allah have mercy on all of them, in a region between Mareb and al-Jawf.

The scholar Shaykh was killed while, praise to Allah, he was steadfast on the oath of advocacy and Jihad. Neither an international nor a regional force could bend him from his road after many rounds of attraction, terrorization, imprisonment and pursuit.

The scholar left [these rounds] victorious with his doctrine—and steadfastness on the doctrine is the true victory—and he died as such, as we consider him, and this is the situation of the Muslim Ummah; her leaders do not die on the bed, but the honor and victory of the Ummah is the martyrdom of her leaders and advocates.

And has an advocacy or a nation lived without sacrifices? Then, we are an Ummah that does not die, but gains victory and lives and revives because death for her is life.

The Americans killed the scholar Shaykh Anwar al-Awlaqi and Samir Khan, but they did not prove any crime they committed and they never presented any proof against them from their laws of unjust freedom. So, where is the freedom, justice, human rights and respect of freedoms they boast of? Did America become so suffocated that it contradicted—and everyday it contradicts—these principles it claims it established its country on?

America has failed as it has not stuck to its principles, and the Shaykh—who lived his doctrine and died for its cause—won. And like that, everyday America kills humans unjustly and aggressively. Its history is black and long and has no limit, and it lies openly that it protects human rights, justice and freedom.

And their liar king comes out to say: killing Shaykh Anwar al-Awlaqi is a victory for the Yemenis because the Shaykh—according to him—killed many Yemenis. Obama forgets that this flip-flopper who…every day is caught confessing that he killed hundreds from the Shaykh’s tribe in al-Me’jala and in the region of Rafad, and most of the casulaties were children, women and elders, with the blessings and participation of Yemen’s butcher Ali Saleh.

Shaykh Anwar has left to the eternal heavens—Allah-willing—and he left for the Ummah a pure ideology, distinguished style and a path in advocacy and Jihad, so the Ummah could walk toward glory and victory.

America killed Shaykh Anwar—may Allah have mercy on him—but it could not kill his thoughts. The martyrdom of the Shaykh is a new and renewing life for his thoughts and style.

And the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—had students he taught, and students who benefited from him from the various counties in the world, and they will walk as he walked, and they will stick to his path in continuation to the straightforward approach, following the trace of the prophet, prayer and peace upon him.

As for the American politicians, people are used to them; each time a leader from the leaders is killed, or a hero from its heroes is martyred, delusion blows in their hearts and would say ‘we destroyed Islam, the Ummah of Muslims is finished, the Ummah of Islam is infertile, today we achieved victory on this or that Muslim.

And those are delusional…as they are fighting an entire Ummah, and great faith; they are fighting against the Ummah of tawhid and jihad, and they will not break our determination.

These appalling methods, and the American-practiced injustice around the world, and the constant support of the Jews and the tyrannical rulers—his deputies—in the region, led to the peoples revolutions and congregating in the arenas, in rejection of these stupid policies and this American injustice toward the world and supporting the cooperative rulers whom they appointed on the necks of the Muslim peoples.

And with the grace of Allah America was slapped in Egypt when the rebels refused to meet with the American secretary of state, and they received another slap in the jihadi Libya. And now, they are watching the Muslim Syrian people, and they are standing incapable in front of the revolution in Yemen that blames and rejects the Americans’ actions, and rejects an American mandate, except of those from the opposition, and with Allah’s grace those do not represent the majority and they have no power on earth.

O’ Yemeni rebels: you have come out for freedom and justice and rejection to a mandate, so you must say your definitive statement against this clear violation of the spheres and the continuous raid on the best of your sons and the weak from your nation of women, elders and children. You must shout in the face of the American representatives just as you scream in the face of Ali Saleh, as they both are two faces to the same coin. Are not our miseries the result of the Americans and their agents?

Ali Abdullah Saleh has taken the Americans as his Lord aside from Allah and they are the ones who are supporting him and legitimizing him, and they have been standing by his side for 30 years.

O’ Yemeni rebels: it is your duty to make the goals of your revolution independence from dependency on the west, and rejection of the Americans’ projects in the region, and to support the Iraqi, Afghani, and Palestinians peoples against the American occupation.

O’ Yemeni rebels: you have created a shining dawn against the cooperative Ali Abdullah Saleh, so you must create another dawn against the Americans in the region.

And lastly, may Allah console us and you O’ Awaliq [tribe] on the killing of your son the great noble heroic Shaykh, the unjustly-killed brave one Anwar bin Nasser al-Awlaqi. And Just yesterday the Mujahid Shaykh Muhammad Omair al-Kulawi al-Awlaqi was killed, as well as a big group of your women, children and elders, and the regime of Ali Saleh has killed the mujahid Shaykh Zayed al-Daghari in a clear targeting of these proud free tribes that accept no injustice nor defeat.

O’ proud tribes: the blood of the Shaykh and his companions will not have been spilled in vain, as behind him are our knights who do not sleep on injustice, and who will take revenge soon Allah-willing.

And the Americans and us are in a war, they beat us and we beat them, and the end to whoever is patient and that will gain victory
