The rule of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi appears to have ended.
Thousands of Gaddafi troops defending Tripoli are thought to have offered no resistance to advancing opposition forces.
Earlier, Gaddafi appeared on state television and called on people to come and defend the capital.
His call came as rebels took control of a prison and military base on the outskirts of the city.
